The electrical activity of the brain can be recorded with an EEG. Changes in brain activity can be used to diagnose brain conditions.

AnEEG is a test that measures electrical activity in the brain using small, metal discs. Brain cells are active all the time and communicate via electrical impulses. The activity shows up on the recording as wavy lines.

It is one of the main diagnostic tests. An EEG can be used to diagnose other brain disorders.

Why is it done ?

Changes in brain activity can be used to diagnose brain disorders. It is possible that an EEG is helpful for diagnosis or treating.

  • There are brain tumors.
  • There is brain damage from a head injury.
  • There are a variety of causes for brain problems.
  • There are sleep disorders.
  • There is inflammation of the brain.
  • There are sleep disorders.
  • There is a disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

It is possible to confirm brain death in someone in a coma. A continuous EEG is used to help find the right level of anesthesia for someone in a medically induced coma.

How do you prepare ?

Food and drugs.

Unless you are told otherwise, take your usual medications.

There are other precautions.

  • Do n’t use styling products on your hair the day of the test, wash it the night before. Hair products can make it harder for the sticky patches to adhere to your hair.
  • Your health care provider might ask you to sleep less or not sleep at all if you ‘re supposed to sleep during your EEG.

What you can expect.

Flat metal discs are attached to the brain. The electrodes are close together. The machine has wires on it. Some people wear an elastic cap fitted with electrodes instead of having the glue applied to their hair.

You wo n’t feel any pain during the EEG. There are no sensations transmitted by the electrodes. They record your brain waves.

There are some things you can expect to happen.

  • A technician takes a measurement of your head and marks it with a pencil. It is possible to improve the quality of the recording by scrubbing the spots on your head.
  • A technician uses a special glue to attach discs to your hair. Sometimes, an elastic cap is used. The brain waves are amplified by an instrument that records them on computer equipment. The EEG takes between 20 and 40 minutes once it ‘s in place. You have to sleep during the test. The test can be longer. /p >
  • During the test, you close your eyes and relax in a comfortable position. At times, the technician will ask you to open and close your eyes, perform a few simple calculations, look at a picture, breathe deeply for a few minutes, or look at a flashing light.
  • Video is recorded during an event. Your body motions are captured by a video camera. Your doctor can use this recording to diagnose and treat your condition.

Outside an office or a hospital, aEEGs allow for longer monitoring. Sometimes these types of EEGs are n’t an option. The test can record brain activity for several days, which increases the chances of recording during seizure activity. An ambulatory EEG is not as good at determining the difference between epileptic seizures and nonepileptic seizures.

After the test.

The technician removes the cap. You should not feel any side effects after the procedure if you did not have a sedative. You should be able to return to your normal routine.

It will take time for the medication to wear off if you use a sedative. You should arrange for someone to drive you home. Do n’t drive for the rest of the day once you ‘re at home.

There were results.

Doctors who are trained to analyze EEGs send the results to the doctor who ordered them. To discuss the results of the test, you need to schedule an office appointment.

Bring a family member or friend with you to the appointment to help you remember.

Write down questions to ask your doctor.

  • What are my next steps based on the results ?
  • Do I need a follow-up ?
  • Is there anything that might have affected the results of this test ?
  • Will I have to take the test again ?
