What is a vice?

A vice is a mechanical device that is used in the engineering field to hold a rigid object. It is used in a lot of different areas. It has wide applications.

Vice is attached to a bench. The bench-vice are attached to the bench in order to be easily accessible and to give operators comfort.

If the working surface is stable, it is not necessary for a bench vice to be attached to the workbench. It can be installed on the side or directly on the surface. It is possible to install the vice directly to the top of the surface.

The linings in the jaws are made of wood or similar materials because a vice is made of metal entirely. This helps the integrity of the work. Jaws can be replaced if they are worn out.

Bench vices are based on their application, strength and durability. Heavy-duty and medium-duty vices are used for industrial purposes. Bench vices can be used as an anvil.

Planning, sawing, drilling, and other types of vice are performed by different types of vice. The bench vice is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the workshop.

I will show the different types of vice and their applications today. Keep reading!

Various applications of vices

The types of vice and their applications are listed below.

Woodworking vices:

There is a Vice in a woodworking shop. The jaws are used to secure the object and the second jaw is used to hold the object firmly.

The jaw can be moved with a screw mechanism. Woodwork vice is usually made of metal, wood or plastic. Depending on the application.

Metalworking vices:

These types of vice are called engineer ‘s vice. It holds the metal piece in place instead of wood. The channel bar of a metalworking vice is usually made of cast iron and steel. Cast iron is cheap and strong.

Cutting and filing are done with metalworking vice. Jaws in this vice are often separated so that they can be replaced. The jaws are covered with a soft layer of materials. This is done to protect the material.

The face of the jaws is jutting out over the front edge of the workbench. The vice bodies may have small anvils behind them. They are available in the base.

Heavy-duty vices:

The heavy-duty bench vice is often made from iron. The parts include steel jaws, a main screw, and a slide bar. Heavy-duty bench vices are available in a variety of styles. This is also referred to as a vice.

Medium duty bench vices:

The one of heavy-duty bench vice is related to this one. It is made of iron and can be used to replace its steel top jaws. There are some types of jaws that have a built-in anvil.

Yoke vices:

The yoke vice uses a screw to hold the pipe in place. The lower jaw and upper jaw are fixed. The jaws are sharp for gripping the object.

Pipe vice:

Plumbing jobs use the vice to hold pipes or secure tubing. It can hold pipes as small as 3mm or as large as 200mm. It can be fitted on a workbench or a mobile tripod stand. portable and easy to transport, the stand is used for projects to be performed outside the workshop. For long lengths of pipe, it can be combined in two or more.

Chain vice:

A chain is used to secure the pipe. The pipe is held tightly by a chain. The chain is made of high-tensile steel and works well with pipes that are irregular. The chain vice has a larger working range and capacity because of the length of the chain. The entire length of the pipe can be held securely by the large surface of the chain. One disadvantage of this vice is that it takes more time to secure a pipe in place with a chain pipe than other vices. The chain must be threaded between the jaws of the tool to hold the pipe in place.
