What are they ?

Parallel sets, also known as precision parallels, are blocks of steel that are made to a flat rectangular shape and produced in matching pairs.

They are ground to an exact size with each face parallel to the other.

This is done with the four main faces.

What are parallel sets used for ?

The main use for a typical set of parallels is to raise your part in a vise. The vise and table of the milling machine are parallel to the floor.

This will allow you to make a part that is flat and measure its thickness along its length.

You can mill or drill all the way through a part without hitting a table or vise if you elevate the part with parallels.

They can be used to make a repeating setup when making multiple parts.

How are parallel sets used ?

You do n’t need a skill in using them, just make sure they are clean and not sitting on chips or debris. Make sure the part you are sitting on is free of chips.
